- Elijah of Buxton takes place in a small settlement in Canada more than a century ago. Name three things about Elijah's home which would probably be different than your own.
- What would be one advantage and one disadvantage to living during this time period?
- Elijah's ma sees him as "fra-gile." What are the characteristics of a "fra-gile" person? How does Elijah get this reputation?
- Describe the Right Reverend Deacon Doctor Zephariah W. Connerly the Third, the man Elijah and Cooter call the Preacher. What is the first clue that he isn't an honest man?
1. Elijahs home seems to be in a swampy place or a forest. It dosent sound like the home is very big. Almost a trailer like home. And he seems to have neighbors but not very close to his home like most people.
ReplyDelete2. One advantage would being able to explore through the woods without fear of anything, and the creativeness of manufacturing your own supplies. One disadvantage would be having not very close security and the worries of viscious wildlife while hunting. And punishment of children of school by teachers. My guess
3. A “fragile” person to me always seems to be jumpy and gets hurt easily emotionally and physically. I think Elijah gets this reputation where he can “prank” people easily or mess with them , but he cant seem to handle it himself
4. The first clue that the “preacher” wasn’t an honest man is when he described what a “Hoop Snake” was and how it can make you blow up
samantha
1. I think his home would be different because it would be really old fashioned, with a thatched roof on his house and no internet or electronics. The only thing kids would have to do was play outside.
ReplyDelete2. An advantage would be that since there are no electronic devices to go on, you would get lots of fresh air and exercise. But the disadvantage would be that it would be awfully boring when you got tired of being outside.
3. Elijah is fragile, meaning he is more sensitive than average. He is afraid of snakes, which makes him all the more fragile.
4. The Preacher isn’t a very honest man because he told Elijah and Cooter about the hoop snakes, but there are no such thing as hoop snakes, so he told a very tall tale.

1. The first thing that is completely different from Elijah’s home to my home is that he lives in a forest near the town while I live in a neighborhood near my school. Elijah’s home is near a river and he likes to go fishing often, and my house I usually go to the park which is near me. His home is made out of entirely of wood and is probably a cabin. My house is made out of wood and other items like most houses now-a-days.
ReplyDelete2. An advantage for living in this time would not having to worry about being hit by a car when you walk to school, and it would be lots of fun to play in the forest but only close to your house. You could use your imagination to make up plenty of games and not be stuck on a screen. A disadvantage would be for the kids at least would be being punished by the teacher if you did something bad then you would get hit by a ruler or stick.
3. Some characteristics of being “fra-gile” would be being scared of everything or be hurt by one tiny hit or even a paper-cut. Elijah gets this reputation by being so scared of snakes and being able to believe almost anything somebody says. Elijah screamed when he saw a snake in one part of the book it said.
4. The first clue that the Preacher isn’t an honest man is when he told Elijah and his friend that there were hoop snakes that could kill you with one tiny bite. He said that part of you would blow up, and you would die from starvation because everything you ate would just go right through you. You can tell he is lying because it isn’t possible for somebody to have half of their body they would just be dead.

1.One thing about Elijah’s home that is different from my home is that there is forest pretty close to his home and where I live there is no forest that close to my home, also in Elijah’s town there are huge toads, but in Nanaimo there are no toads as big as the ones Elijah descried.
ReplyDelete2.One advantage to living in this period would be that the parents could beat the children if the children were being naughty to teach the children a lesson, but a disadvantage would be if you were a child you might get beat up by your parents.
3.Elijah gets his reputation for being “fragile” because he is scared of snakes and especially hoop snakes that the Preacher told them about
4.The first clue that tells me that the Preacher is not an honest man is that he told Elijah and Cooter a fake story about “hoof snakes” when the two boys saw the tracks in the dirt and garden.

1. Elijah’s home is very isolated, he has a swamp for a backyard and it doesn’t seem to have any neighbours nearby.
ReplyDelete2. An advantage about living in this time period would be finding creatures way easier because there aren’t as many building or people in general. A disadvantage about living in the time period Elijah Buxton is in is technology because he isn’t able to turn lights on and he must have to wash his clothes himself well at least I hope someone does.
3. Squeamish maybe unadventurous and someone who hates insects spiders snakes ect I would say are characteristics of a fragile person.
4. The first clue I get that the Preacher isn’t an honest man is that he told Elijah and Cooter there were these scary creatures called hoopsnakes that would kill anything on sight.

1. First of all his house is in the forest which my house is more in the city and saying it was close to a hundred years ago, they wouldn’t have some of the technology like televisions or phones like I have in my house.
ReplyDelete2. One advantage for the parents living during that time period is that they have the option to punish their children by beating them.
3. A ‘fra-gile’ person is someone who is weaker and is offended or hurt really easily. Elijah gets this reputation by one of the things was that he always teases his mom with a ‘toady-frog’/toad so she got him to run into a snake and he freaked out and got upset when his parents were laughing.
4. The first clue that the preacher isn’t an honest man is that on one of the first few pages he says that snake tracks are wolves tracks and Elijah and Cooter believe him.

1. Well in the book it says that there are rocking chairs on the front porch, they also have lots of forests and we don't have that many forests and the whip their children with a switch.
ReplyDelete2. One advantage would be that there is noone with phones and they haven't been to school yet, and a disadvantage would be they whip their KIDS!!!!!!!
3. One characteristics are that they are scared of every thing. I don't think that Elijah needs that name because I would be scared if someone tolled me those story's I would be "fra-gile" too.
4. the first clue is that he is making those kids scared by telling them those scary story's that's not nice and not honest.
~Trysta
1. Elijah`s home is different to mine because parents were allowed to whip their children back then and that it was so much more strict. Elijah community is different to mine also because it sounded like he knew everyone who lived around his area and he lives in a smaller community.
ReplyDelete2. One disadvantage of living in a time period a century ago was that it was harder to make a living and find a job that was well paid. One advantage of living a century ago was that life wasn’t as confusing back then because there was only a few jobs around the town where as now there are so many different carrier options it’s so confusing.
3. A fragile person would be a person that is always scared of everything and everyone. Elijah shows this by being scared of snakes (Which I am too) and that is one of the reasons he earned his reputation.
4. The first clue he isn’t an honest man is that he told them there were hoop snakes and they better run for their lives! He isn’t being honest because there is no such thing as a hoop snake. (I looked on Wikipedia). The Preacher says that he’s the smartest person around so that makes me think that he is thinks very highly of himself.

1) Elijah story takes place a long time ago, so three things that are different from his house and mine are…
ReplyDelete-it sounds like they own a lot of land
-it sounds like he has a ranch-type house
-his parents sit on ‘the front stoop’ and I know that at my own house, we do not have that
2) An advantage to live in this time would be that you could spend a lot more time outside, for there would be less building development and more forests and streams and because there are being less and less of those forest type of environments there would probably be more forest. A disadvantage is that during those times would be that those were probably times where children got ‘wacked’ with sticks, as Elijah’s father says “why don’t you go into the woods and pick out the stick you want her to beat you with.”
3) Characteristics of a ‘fragile’ person would be, say, if you were afraid of someone or thing and instead of standing up to your fear, you ran away screaming. He got this reputation from his ow mother.
4) The first clue that showed you that the preacher was not an honest man was when he was talking about hoop snakes and he was talking about a death that sounded very unrealistic.-Jaden

ReplyDelete2. One advantage and one disadvantage to living during this time period is that parents could use corporal punishment and one advantage was that less kids’ parents were over protective.
3. The characteristics of a "fragile" person are that they are scared and more sensitive to anything bad happening to them. Elijah gets this reputation because when he was little he and his mother were walking and she picked up a snake and he got so scared he ran away.
4. He did not look at them while telling them about hoop snakes.

1 One thing that’s different about Elijah near the woods and mine isn’t and a second thing is that I don’t live near toads and a third thing is Nanaimo doesn’t have a town and Elijah does.
ReplyDelete2 One disadvantage is the parents can hit their child with a stick and nowadays they can’t. The advantage is that you get more time outside.
3 A fra-gile person could be scared or nervous so that’s how he gets his reputation.
4 the first clue is that the Preacher tells maybe a lie to them because there is no such thing as hop snake
Adam
1. One thing I don’t have in my house is a stoop, and a second thing I don’t have near my house is a river, and last there is no big frogs where I live.
ReplyDelete2. One advantage of living in that time would be getting out more and not on technologies. One disadvantage would be that your parents and teachers can hit you multiple times for being naughty.
3. Some characteristics of being fragile are sensitive, scared by anything and very jumpy.
4. The first clue that he isn’t an honest man is that you can’t die that quick from venin and its impossible to swell up that much.

4. Frist he sounds like a very crazy man thinking something from his past like something for his childhood came back to his time.
Zoe
1. Elijah’s home is different from mine because I don’t live in the Jungle, He doesn’t have Wi-Fi :( And it doesn’t seem like his house is big maybe he live in like a RV or something and he might have neighbors if he does the neighbors live quite far away from him.
ReplyDelete2. One advantage would be wondering around the jungle looking at all the wildlife, But the disadvantage is that if you have such close security by every time you get close to an animal the guards might attack the animal for getting to close to Elijah.
3. A “fra- gile” person is someone who usually gets hurt easily or is scared of everything. Elijah gets this reputation because teases his mom about the frog so his mom gets a snake and that scares Elijah.
4. The first clue that the preacher was he wasn’t an honest man about the snake and he was saying that the snake would blow you up.

2. One advantage would be that since he lives in a jungle he can probably go out every day that it’s nice and climb the trees one disadvantage is that normally in the jungle they get a lot of rain and there wouldn’t be a lot of places to buy clothes and food at nearby.
3. A ‘’ fragile’’ person is someone who is sometimes weak and can’t do a lot by themselves. He gets scared when he sees a snack and that makes him even more fragile.

Advantage: I would probably read more, and not get addicted to electronics, etc.
3.The characteristics of a “fra-gile” person would probably be
-being sensitive
-not wanting to harm nature
