    2. What has Mrs. Baker taught Holling about himself?  How?
    3. How does Holling show that he loves his sister?
    4. At one point, Holling argues with his father about picking up his sister from the bus station.  What growth is Holling showing by standing up to his father?

    1. 1. Holling thought the kid that Mrs. Baker hated with the heat whiter than the sun was himself, but I think she did not hate him because when they were practicing how to hide from a bomb Mrs. Baker made an excuse to leave the classroom by dropping a bottle that made a mess so Holling and her could drive around town to look at buildings and not stay in the school and do bombing drills. She also spent her time with Holling after school when the other children went to Temple Beth-el or Saint Adalbert’s.
      2. Mrs. Baker taught Holling that life is not always fair and to enjoy it while you can.
      3. Holling shows that he loves his sister because he sent money to her and going to pick her up from the bus station.
      4. Holling is showing growth because he can make choices of his own like when he went to pick up his sister from the bus station.

    2. 1. Mrs. Baker hated Holling from the beginning of the year. I agree with Holling that she hated him but as the year progressed further I think they started to like each other. Near the beginning of the year Mrs. Baker says his last name Holling Hood Hood meanly and near the middle of the year she starts to like him more because she bought cream puffs when Holling lost his cream puffs from the rats. Mrs. Baker also showed him how to run better than how he was earlier since he was in cross country.
      2. Mrs. Baker taught Holling never to judge a person before you actually meet and get to know them. She taught him that by being mean in the beginning but closer to the middle of the year she starts being nicer to Holling.
      3. Holling shows he loves his sister by going to pick her up at the bus station using all his money for her to get home. He even tries to go in the car even though he doesn’t have a license!
      4. Holling is showing his growth of kindness when he stands up to his father because his father says it’s all her fault for trying to go to California in the first place. I also think that Holling seems to act older when Holling and his dad are arguing.

    3. 1. The kid that Mrs. Baker hated the most of all the kids in the seventh grade at Camillo Junior High was Holling. I disagree with Holling I think Mrs. Baker didn’t hate Holling she just didn’t like that she had to spend her Wednesday afternoons with him when the entire class was out at either Temple Beth-el or Saint Adelbert’s. Though soon Mrs. Baker and Holling realize that they could possibly even become friends or at least aquatints. Mrs. Baker shows that she appreciates or likes Holling because when the rats In Mrs. Baker’s classroom eat the cream puffs that Holling bought Mrs. Baker helps Holling by buying the exact amount of cream puffs, light, puffy, golden, perfect cream puffs. I also think that Mrs. Baker likes Holling because when Holling’s father couldn’t make it to drive Holling to a baseball game Mrs. Baker drove Holling to see the game even just to see a bit of the end. Mrs. Baker also invited 2 Yankee baseball players to school to hang out and practice some baseball with Holling, Doug, and Danny. The two Yankee players were Joe Pepitone and Horace Clarke.
      2. Mrs. Baker taught Holling that to enjoy life as it is. It may not be perfect but he has many things that anybody would enjoy. Mrs. Baker told Holling that hiding underneath your desks may not protect you from an atomic bomb but people tell others to do so because it gives others comfort so it tricks your mind to think that you are safe when you have actually no way to hide behind this all. Mrs. Baker says that you should be appreciated at everything you have and learn everything possible so that when you get older you will be wise and be able to make responsible decisions.
      3. Holling shows his sister he loves her by trading his $100 Salisbury Park savings bond to receive $52 to mail all the money to his sister so she could get back home. If Holling waited a few more years though he could have received about $100. Holling also showed that he cared for his sister because he asked his mom and dad if somebody could pick his sister up where she was staying 10:00 but there parents said no so Holling went all the way there by himself just to pick up his sister.
      4. Holling is showing growth by standing up to his father because he realizes he can’t just be a puppet on a string to his father, it’s his life not his father’s Holling can do whatever he wants as long as he feels it is right.

    4. 1. He, Holling, was the kid that he said that Mrs. Baker hated the most. I agreed with Holling in the start of the book at first, but then as the story went on it seemed that Mrs. Baker got nicer and kinder to Holling in school and on Wednesday afternoons. Evidence that says maybe Mrs. Baker did not really like him at the start of the book is “Mrs. Baker looked hard at me. I think she rolled her eyes.’ Since the mutilation of guess into an intransitive verb is a crime against the language, perhaps you might wish a full sentence to avoid prosecution-something as, ‘I guess that Wednesday afternoons will be busy after all? Said Mrs. Baker. And another piece of evidence at the beginning of the book that Mrs. Baker might not like Holling is “We spent the afternoon learning how to diagram sentences. One by one she called us up to the black board to try it. Here’s the sentence she gave to Danny-He kicked the round ball into the goal. Here’s the sentence she gave to Mai Thi-the girl walked home. Here’s the sentence she gave to me-For it falls out, that what we have we prize not to the worth whiles we enjoy it; but being lacked and lost, why, then we would rack the value, then we would find the virtue that possession would not show us while it was ours.” Here is some evidence that later in the book, she becomes nicer to Holling during the book. “I lit a candle in the warm, dark, waxy-smelling air of Saint Adalbert’s. I put it beside the one Mrs. Baker had lit.” another piece of evidence that Mrs. Baker does not hate him is when the rats eat the cream puffs and Mrs. Baker buys the class another set and says they are from Holling.
      2. Mrs. Baker has taught Holling that he is a brave nice person and a fast runner. The brave part is proved when he goes to get his sister and the nice part is when he gives her money and takes Meryl Lee to a play. Mrs. baker taught Holling to be confident, which is proved when she tells him to pass eight graders in a cross country meet and he takes up all his courage and does. Mrs. Baker has also told him that he should be what he wants to be and not just have to follow in his father’s footsteps.
      3. Holling shows that he loves his sister by sticking up to his dad to go and get her and then getting a ride to find her and bring her home.
      4. Holling is showing growth by sticking up to his father by being, that in the start of the book, he would most likely would not of stood up to his father like that, but now that he had someone to

    6. 1. I think that she never disliked Holling because she brought in cream puffs and took him on trips and at the meet she was cheering and when he got hit by the bus Ms. Baker took him to the hospital so I don’t think that she hate’s him.
      2. Ms. Baker taught holling to hold on to what you got because there are people that are less lucky. This happened in the church.
      3. Holling shows he loves his sister by going to get her when his parents won’t.
      4. Holling is showing to his father that they don't have to be just like him they can by their own person and he doesn't what his sister to go again because that feeling is not good. It’s better that there together even if they fight.

    7. 1. Mrs. Backer hated Holling during the school year but when those day past by she has done many kind things to Holling like practicing baseball with a famous baseball Picher or hitter and drove him around the whole town he lives in and telling him what they are and mean.
      2. Baker says to Holling “There is a part of us that can be so awful. Shakespeare shows it to us in Caliban. But there is another part of us too.
      3. He mailed $52 to his sister so her sister would be able to a ticket back home so she does her not need to stay there for a long time.
      4. He is telling his father to care for his sister and not to be A mean person and get his daughter from the bus station that’s just very mean to leave a person from your family at a bus station.

    8. 1. The one kid who Mrs. Baker “hated” so much was Holling himself. Honestly I don’t agree with Holling . Mrs. Baker has done a lot for Holling like buying creampuffs for the whole class after Sycorax and Caliban ate his, and when Mrs. Baker supported him through out the play and helped him practice on Wednasday afternoons. Another few examples are when Mickey Mantle didn’t sign his baseball because he was wearing yellow tights so Mrs. Baker took him Doug Switeck and Doug Switecks brother to the baseball stadium to play baseball with 2 of the teams players, and the time he was running the race and Mrs. Baker was cheering him on the whole way. So Honestly I don’t think Mrs. Baker hates him.
      2. She taught Holling that he can run faster than he ever imagined, and that he should be confident and run in front of the 8th graders. She taught him this through confidence and on the on Wednesday afternoons.
      3. He shows that he loves his sister through his concern if shes okay and sending her money and begging her dad to pick he up at the bus station.
      4. His growth for standing up to his father is enormous. He shows confident and shows no one can push him around, or stop him for standing up for himself and his sister

    9. 1. The kid Mrs. Baker hates is Holling. Mrs. Baker left the window open when the cream puffs were there and chock got on them. Mrs. Baker told ever one that was in Hollings class that he was in a play.
      2. Mrs. Baker taught Holling that he could run the race in cross country.
      3. Holling shows that he loves his sister by sending her money when she left to go ‘find’ herself.
      4. Holling is showing growth by not being afraid to stand up for him self and go get his sister.

    10. 1. The kid who thought Mrs. Baker hated him with the heat whiter then the sun was Holling Hoodhood. I do not agree with Holling because Mrs. Baker took him to the last part of the baseball game when his dad was supposed to and Mrs. Baker also let him have a cream puff after he cleaned all of the chalk board erasers and Mrs. Baker didn’t completely blame the missing cutlery on Holling too.
      2. Mrs. Baker taught Holling about in life just learn as much as you can.
      3. Holling shows that he loved his sister by sending her his entire saving that only equaled out to half but he still sent it to her to get her back home.
      4. The growth Holling shows by standing up to his to his father is that he can fight for himself and hes growing up.

    11. 1. The one kid that Mrs. Baker hated with a heat whiter than the sun was Holling Hood Hood, but frankly I don’t agree with Holling because I don’t think any teacher hates a student she probably just didn’t want to stay longer at work. At the beginning Mrs. Baker makes poor Holling do chores, but then she decides to make him read Shakespere. Holling thinks that’s worse, but then he realizes that it’s actually a pretty good book. And then when Sycorax and Caliban the rats eat Holling’s creampuffs for the class Mrs. Baker is kind enough to replace them for free. She teaches him to run a lot better, and takes him to the New York Yankees game when his dad bails out on him.
      2. Mrs. Baker thought Holling to stand up for himself and to try not to be embarrassed about every mistake he makes.
      3. Holling shows that he loves his sister by devoting himself to get her home when she’s in need when Chit ditches her, Holling ditches school and uses all his saved money to pair for his sister to get home when his dad won’t.
      4. The growth Holling shows by standing up to his father is his dad can’t make him do whatever he says for him to.

    12. 1. This kid was Holling, and I think Mrs. Baker actually likes him now, but on the first day of seventh grade, she discovered that on Wednesday afternoons she would have to stay at school with Holling, and she glared at him. Also, there was the time where she made him read Shakespeare, which she thought he would hate, but he didn’t hate it that much. Then there was the time she bought cream puffs for the class and said that Holling bought them, which was extremely nice of her. She also helped him with his running and bought tickets for him and Meril Lee to go see Romeo and Juliet, so I don’t think she really hates him anymore.
      2. Mrs. Baker has taught Holling that he can have the confidence to run in front of 8th graders, and she taught him that he can be a good student and have confidence in himself.
      3. Holling shows that he loves his sister by going to pick her up at the station when their father or mother wouldn’t.
      4. Holling is showing his father that he has grown into a man

    13. 1. Holling was that kid that Mrs. Baker hated. I do agree with Holling because he did not go to church school so Mrs. Baker did not like just teaching Holling, but over the year Mrs. Baker and Holling have a friendship over all the things they have been through.
      2. Mrs. Baker tought Holling to believe in himself for running and have courage by Wednesday afternoons when everybody was gone but him so they had time to practice.
      3. Holling shows that he loves her by sending money from his bond to help his sister when his father didn’t care.
      4. His growth to stand up to his father is Holling showing him that he is a man.

    14. 1.Holling thought the kid that Ms. Baker hated with the heat whiter than the sun, was his self, No I do not agree with Holling because in the middle of the bomb practice Ms. Baker purposely dropped a bottle so Holling would and her could go through town looking at different buildings. She also helped Holling with the cream puffs after the rats ate um so she bought extra cream puffs for the class.
2.Ms. Baker taught Holling that life cannot always be fair, “so enjoy it well you can”
3.Holling is now showing love to his sisters because when he sent money to his sister to catch a ride, and he also said he will drive and get her.
      4. Holling is showing growth by standing up to his father because he said I will drive and get her from the bus station.

    15. 1.“That kid” is Holling Hoodhood himself. I don’t agree with Holling because Mrs. Baker made him read Shakespeare and memorize them, which helped him owe the creampuffs to his classmates, and when the rats ate the creampuffs, she bought it for the whole class. Also, she brought the baseball players to see Holling, Doug and Danny, since Mickey Mantle told Holling off, and Danny gave his baseball back, and stood up for him.
2.Mrs. Baker taught Holling about what Shakespeare is trying to say in his stories, and what some things actually mean more, and she also taught him about how there are so many importance in life (etc.).
3.Holling shows that he loves his sister by finding her when she failed trying to find herself with Chit.
4.Holling showed his dad a lot growth when he stood up for his sister from the bus station, and maybe even more growth than his father. He has also stood up for himself after his father said: “Being a man is getting a job and taking 'care'of their family" and when Holling told him that he didn’t know yet, and he would tell his dad when he finds out. And on that day, Holling too became a man by speaking wisely and standing up for himself.

    16. 1. 1. Holling was that kid we thought but do we have proof. I do not agree with holling it is not his flat he is he had to stay on Wednesdays. I think Mrs. Backer likes holling why else would she have gave holling a cream puff, drove him to the Yankee stadium and not blame him for the leak when they were going camping and more. She must like holling.
      2. 2. She taught Holling how to run like Jessie Owens and then showed him her medal from the Olympics.
      3. 3. On the day that she left with chit holling missed his sister most sent her money to come back and she did then they realized how much they love each other.
      4. 4. He is showing some first steps of manhood he is growing up and is not afraid to stand up to his father. -Cole

    17. 1. This kid who Mrs. Baker hated was Holling Hood Hood. Yes I do agree with Holling because ever since Holling met Mrs. Baker he thought that she has been out to get him for example: when Danny’s brother wanted Holling to play soccer, and then Holling tripped Doug swieteck’s brother into the goal post, and then after that I think she was mad so she gave Holling a MASSIVE sentence to diagram. And the time when she gave Mr. Guareschi a memo saying that Holling had to retake sixth grade mathematics and he had to stay with Mrs. Baker every Wednesday, but… Mrs. Baker has done some good for Holling like bringing cream puffs for the class after sycorax and Caliban ate all of Holling’s.
      2. Mr. Baker has taught Holling a lot of things about himself for example: she taught him to run even faster than the eighth graders, and confidence for the school play.
      3. Holling showed that he loves his sister by going to find her after she called Holling and said that she was ditched by her boyfriend and that she wanted help, so Holling cashed in all of his allowance for train rides, and then after he found his sister he bought her a big lunch and then brought her home.
      4. Holling showed a lot of growth by standing up to his father and showing that he can’t be controlled and let his father pick his decisions, because Holling can do whatever his heart tells him to do, and he is Holling a man by doing this.
