Private Peaceful: A Minute Past Three

This is a picture of typical trench where soldiers spent their days and nights.

1. Who is Captain Wilkie? How is he different from Sergeant Hanley? (p.120)

2. Is the war going well for the soldiers? How do you know this?

3. What problems were there in the trenches?

4. Anna, the girl from the estaminet, reminds Tommo of Molly. Write about a time when you saw someone who reminded you of a person you know.  Tell what it was about that person (not just looks) that reminded you of them.

    2. I think the war is sort of going well, because there are other soldiers out there that have it worse, and Tommo and Charlie are just preparing. I know this because nobody has really been killed, and Tommo and Charlie are still alive.

    3. In the trenches, there were rats, your feet were always wet, and some people got pneumonia and trench-foot.

    4. I once knew someone that looked a bit like my mom. But she acted like my mom too, and she was really nice. I find that they have a lot in common.

  6. 1Captain Wilkie is the man who became their sergeant when they got to the war field. He is different from sergeant Hanley because he is nice and treats them with respect and he encourages them and makes them feel less frightened of the war and what they are going to have to do, while sergeant horrible Hanley found reasons to pick on them that Wilkie would never imagine doing.
2 I think the war is going about the same for both the teams because they said that “when we throw one shell in their trenches they throw one back.”
3 The problems that they were having in the trenches were trench foot, pneumonia and lice. They also were cold all the time and did not have much food as well as rats.
4 I once saw a person who looked like my mom and had the same camera has her and had the same voice as her. -Jaden

  13. 1. Captain Wilkie is Tommo and Charlies new Captain. 15. 1. Captain Wilkie is Charlie’s and Tommo’s new sergeant. Sergeant Hanley and Captain Wilkie are very different from each other because Sergeant Hanley is very strict and not in a good way, but Captain Wilkie may be strict at times but usually he is very kind. Captain Wilkie has the soldiers sing songs while they march to the trenches, and Sergeant Hanley is no man of mercy and much dislikes if you aren’t afraid of him.
    2. The war is going well for the soldiers so far because neither the German nor the British, America, etc. is attacking
    3. The problem in the trenches was that Charlie Tommo, and his friends all went to the German trenches to take a hostage so they could find out as much about what the Germans are doing. Unfortunately while taking the prisoner they were soon discovered. Tommo, Charlie and his friends ran out of the German trenches and ran as fast as they could across no man’s land. Shells and flares went up everywhere, and thankfully Charlie, Tommo, and his friends all got back to their trenches safely.
    4. I had I a friend that was visiting Canada from Korea, and she came to learn English a bit more. She had black hair, dark brown eyes, and was slightly taller than me her name was Jiho. After 2 years she left she was one of my best friends but I quickly got over it. About 3 years later another girl came from Korea strangely she looked almost identical as Jiho. Soon she and I became the best of friends. Oddly though once again she liked the same things as Jiho.

    2. No it is not going well for the soldiers at all. I know this because they have to sleep in trenches half filled with water, stay cold and wet and, have to face German soldiers, and only get minimal food and sleep.
    3. Problems with the trenches were that they were that they got filled with water and got bombed easily.
    4. One person that reminds me of someone else is Mr. Nixon, here’s how the story goes, one day, unfortunately, (no just kidding he is awesome), I met Mr. Nixon he has the same personality as my teacher in Ireland he had a personality like Mr. Nixon‘s, and I forget his name.
