  1. Holling’s friends insisted he replace the cream puffs eaten by the rats. Was this fair of them? Why do you think Mrs. Baker replaced the cream puffs?
  2. Caliban is a monster in Shakespear's play The Tempest.  Holling says that monsters must always be defeated if there is to be a happy ending. Do you agree with him? Why or why not? How does this apply to his own life? Does this always happen in real life? Give examples
  3. How is playing "Ariel" in the school play going to affect Holling's life in your opinion?
Possible spellings you may need: Sycorax and Caliban, Presbyterian

  1. 1. No, I do not think its fair for Holling to buy more cream puffs because he had already bought cream puffs for the class and if he has to buy them again then it would be very bad. I think Mrs. Baker replaced the cream puffs because she might have felt bad or to make him think that she was nice, but she is not, or maybe she is really nice.

    2. No, I do not agree with Holling because if there is a monster, then maybe the main character could talk to the monster and tell it not to hurt anyone. This applies to his own life because Mrs. Baker could be the monster and he has to defeat her. No, this does not always happen in real life because there is not always a monster, and sometimes the good person can lose to the monster.

    3. Playing Ariel in the school play is going to affect Holling’s life because after the play the children might tease him and make fun of him.

    1. Hi, Jasleen. Some good ideas. I'm not sure what you mean here:
" I think Mrs. Baker replaced the cream puffs because she might have felt bad or to make him think that she was nice, but she is not, or maybe she is really nice. ". Are you saying that you think she is nice or? What do you think Mrs. Baker is trying to do on Wednesday afternoons with Holling in the class?

  2. 1 I don’t think it is fair that Hollings classmates were angry because there was nothing he could do. Mrs. Baker replaced the cream puffs because she felt very bad for Holling.
2 I don’t think the bad guy should lose for just a happy ending in a book because sometimes they're nice. This doesn't affect Holling at all.
3 I think playing Ariel in the play would maybe make people think of him as girly.

    1. Ethan, for question #2, if you think of "the monster" not as a monster, but as a giant problem for Holling, then would your answer change?

  3. 1. This was not fair because it was not Holling’s fault that the cream puffs got eaten by rats. I think Mrs. Baker replaced them because she wanted him to think that she liked him so she could surprise him later on.
    2. I don’t agree with him, because in order to have a happy ending the villain must be defeated, but Holling says the monster needs to be defeated, but what if there is a good monster in the story?
    3. I think playing Ariel is going to make people laugh at him, and he won’t feel very good about that because it always hurts when people are mean.

    1. I think the traditional idea of a monster is not a good one. Instead of monster what word could Holling have used?

  4. 1. I think that it was really unfair to have to buy the cream puffs again because it was not his fault in the first place that the rats got out of their cage and ate the cream puffs. I think Mrs. Baker got the cream puffs for Holling because she felt that she had made Holling drop the rat cage in the first place and that it was her fault.
    2. I don’t think that monsters have to be defeated to have a happy ending because all they have to do is learn to be nice and don’t have to be defeated.
    3. Playing Ariel in the play is affecting his life because he thinks everyone will laugh at him for playing a girl so he feels ashamed.

  5. 1. It think this was unfair of Hollings friends insist on replacing the cream puffs when it wasn’t his fault that the rats ate the cream puffs, it’s not like he wanted the rats to eat them because he had one for himself too. I think Mrs. Baker replaced the cream puffs because she wanted to show Holling that she wasn’t all that bad so that Holling wouldn’t judge all teachers to be ‘torturing’ the students
    2. I personally don’t agree with him because not all stories end with the monsters defeated such as some books about kids in middle school the ‘popular people’ are considered the ‘monster or ‘bad guy’ But sometimes those are the people that win because that’s just well life. Nothing is perfect. I think how this applies to his own life is he’s hoping to ‘defeat’ Mrs. Baker. The monsters or ‘bad guys’ don’t always get defeated in real life but sometimes there still is a happy ending for example what if you become friends with them?
    3. I think playing ‘Ariel’ will affect Hollings life because Ariel is a fairy and his costume has yellow tights and feathers on his “ “. Ariel is also a girl’s name usually.

    1. Great answer to number 2, Angela. I agree.

  6. 1. I think that it was not fair for the rest of the class to want more cream puffs after the rats had eaten them because even though I would want another set of cream puffs to, they should try to imagine being in Hollings place and think how hard it was for him to buy those cream puffs in the first place and if he was broke the first time, they should think how hard it would be for him to buy a second set of cream puffs! I also think it was not fair that the rest of the class only gave Holling ten days to get new ones.
    2. I do not agree with him because the ‘monster’ should be given a second chance to change their life and start a new, happier one. I think it applies to his life being that Ms. Baker is the monster but then I think he started to realize that maybe the monster did not have to be defeated when Ms. Baker gave the whole class a new set of cream puffs. Sometimes the bad guy or monster does not have to be defeated in real life. Like, when people go to jail, after they have been through their consequence then they are given a chance to start over and make their life happier.
    3. I thought at first that it would not be so great to be him because he had an ‘interesting’ costume and Meryl Lee and other people in his class were going to see him in that interesting costume but then near the end of the play when he looked down in the front row and saw that everyone was crying I think it would have been ok to play that part.

  7. 1. No I don't think that it was fair that he had to buy more for the class.I think that miss baker was nice to do that and she bot more because she felt bad that these were going to kill him.
2.No I don't agree that the monster has to die for ever one to be happy why because I think that's cruel.I don't think this apply s to Holling thought.
    3. I think that this will ruin his life of middle school and maybe high school to!!:(

  8. 1. No it was not fair of them because it is not his fault that the rat’s eta the cream puffs. I think that Mrs. Baker replaced the cream puffs because she says all the people giving him a hard time.
    2. Yes I do agree with him because it is like a movie if the kid is the main character he is most likely not to die. This apply with his life because it is like the cream puffs and the rats eating it then Mrs. Baker goes and gets all 24 cream puffs and then it is a happy ending. No it does not always happen in real life. 2 examples are in the movies it could of be a good monster, and it is also like getting a big job and that is a win.
    3. I think playing Ariel is going to affect Holling life because he might not have good friends. Or Holling might have really good friends like when his friends gave up his baseball because his Holling idle refused to sing his baseball.

  9. 1. No I do not think it was fair of Hollings classmates to insist he buy more cream puffs because it wasn’t his fault Sycorax and Caliban ate the cream puffs. I think Mrs. Baker replaced the cream puffs because she may have felt bad for Holling because her rats ate his cream puffs.
    2. I kind of agree with Holling because if the bad guys win it wiil be a twist and make the story interesting but if the good guys win it’s just the same as every other fairytale. It applies in his life because he considers himself the good guy and Mrs. Baker the bad. This does some times pop up in reality it really depends what you’re up against.
    3. Playing Ariel will affect Holling because he had to race to the Bakers sporting emporium and didn’t end up getting his baseball signed by the famous baseball player just because he was wearing

  10. 1. No I do not think it’s fair that his classmates insisted on Holling buying more cream puffs that Sycorax and Caliban ate because he bought them as promised but the rats ate them, and it took him three weeks to buy them all. I think Mrs. Baker replaced the creampuffs because Sycorax and Caliban are her rats and they ate them.
    2. I think it depends because if it’s a misunderstood moster who turns out to be really sweet and cuddly I don’t think he or she should be defeated. This affects Hollings life because he thinks Doug Swytex and his brother should be defeated. This happens in real life whenbullies or robber or killers get caught by the police.
    3. Playing Ariel in the school play is going to affect Holling’s life because he is probably going to get teased and bullied a lot more.

  12. 1. Mrs. Baker replaced the cream puffs because she maybe wanted to help Hoodhood and maybe give Hoodhood a break of buying cream puffs.
    2. I don’t agree when Holling says that monsters must always be defeated if there is to be a happy ending because the movie producers or author might want to make a part 2 of the movie or book.
    3. playing "Ariel" in the school play going to affect Holling's life by because when the boy’s change room was locked then when he went to sport store the best baseball player was signing at the sport store and hoodhood got turned down by the baseball player.

  13. 1. No I don’t think it was fair for Holling to have to buy more cream puffs because he bought them with his money and it wasn’t his fault that the rats ate them. I think Mrs. Baker replaced the cream puffs because she felt bad or maybe she was already bringing some before for the class.
    2. I don’t think he is right that monsters have to be defeated for there to be a happy ending because that’s not always the way it works. Like in soccer one team wins but the other one hopefully had fun but to some people that wouldn’t be a happy ending.
    3. I think playing Ariel in the school play is going to make lots of people make fun of him. It could be even worse than the thing that happened with the cream puffs.

  14. 1. I think it is unfair that Hollings friends made him replace the cream puffs that Sycorax and Caliban ate because it isn’t really his fault that that happened, or so they know. I think Mrs. Baker replaced the cream puffs because maybe she thought that Holling would be bullied and it would cause problems or she thought that he was doing good in school.
    2. I agree with Holling because if there is still a monster then no one should have a good life because it’s a monster. I think that applies with his life because Doug Swietecks brother has a way of picking on holling. I do not think his happens in real life or applies in real life.
    3. In my opinion it will affect Hollings life because people could remember and talk about him playing a girl part and him wearing yellow tights with feathers on the butt.

  15. 1.It wasn’t fair of Holling’s friends telling him to replace the cream puffs that were eaten by Sycorax and Caliban because it wasn’t his fault that the rats ate the cream puffs. I think Mrs. Baker replaced the cream puffs because maybe she meant for his cream puffs to be eaten by the rats since she told them that they could have the cream puffs after the free period then she started to feel bad for him because he’s getting “threatened” by his friends, or maybe because she didn’t want anyone to fuss about it during her class or something.
2.I disagree with him because the “monster” or the “bad guy” could always turn into a “good guy” by getting help from the other “good guys” and have a both way happy ending. I guess that Holling could ask Mrs. Baker if anything is bothering her from Holling he could say that he would try better not to be a klutz, or he could say a student and a teacher should try to get along.
3.I think playing "Ariel" in the school play going to affect Holling's life because the part Ariel is a girl act, and he is wearing yellow tights with feathers on the butt.

  16. 1. Yes because of Holling`s was very cooperative with Mrs. Backer on Wednesdays. 2. Like I think everyone deserves a ending say Caliban could get locked away where he could do no harm.3. Like if anyone found out he would be made fun of for being a fairy as a girls part.

  17. 1. No that would not be fair because it wasn’t his fault that the rats ate the cream puffs.
    2. No the monsters do not half to be defeated if there is to be a happy ending because some monsters do not die and there is a happy ending.
    3. Yes playing Ariel will affect Hollings life because you could get teased and made fun of by other people.

  18. Holling’s friends insisted he replace the cream puffs eaten by the rats. Was this fair of them because he did not no or mean to let the rats out. Mrs. Baker replaced the cream puffs because she felt sorry for Holling and she knows what happened and she sow it too. Caliban is a monster in Shakespear's play The Tempest. Holling says that monsters must always be defeated if there is to be a happy ending. I don’t because the only happy ending is if someone is safe. Playing "Ariel" in the school play going to affect Holling's life in my opinion because he gets teased by the kids in his scool from the tights with the fethers on his but and from the teacher inviting and talking about the show I class.

  19. 1. No I don’t think it’s fair for the kids to get holling to replace the cream puffs after the Rats ate it and his dad won’t raise his rent.
    2. No I don’t agree with him it does not matter to me if the bad guy to be killed or put to jail for anything . Why its just maybe it was how he was born or he didn’t have a good life (like in every movie I see)
    3. If I was playing as Ariel I would not agree to wear BRIGHT YELLOW SHORTS with feathers why would it would change my life if any of my friends saw me wear those type of shorts I would be embarrassed to see my Friends looking at me or grinning at me I would move to sprain with nana.

  21. 1. It was not fair of Hollings classmates to treat him like this because it’s not his fault.
    2. I agree with Holling because defeating the bad guys is an interesting story although if he gets away it makes a second movie.
    3. In my opinion Hollings part as Ariel is going to change how students look at him because he is playing a girl although its Shakespeare so the part might suit him.

  23. 1. No this was not fair. I think Mrs. Baker replaced the cream puffs because maybe she thought that it was unfair that the rats ate Hollings cream puffs and she wanted to make him happy and so the kids wouldn’t get mad at Holling.
    2. No I don’t agree with him because maybe the hero can make the villain learn to be nice. (Or just lock the monster up.) This applies to his own life because maybe Mrs. Baker is the monster and Holling wouldn’t want to kill her. Yes this does happen in real life. What if you put someone in jail and they’re going to try to kill you when they get out?
    3. I think playing Ariel is going to affect Hollings life because maybe someone bad from his school is going to watch and they might tell everyone.

  24. 1. Hollings friends were not far to Holling because he got offered to have. I think his friends were being greedy.
    2. I do not agree with Holling to make a happy ending no one or thing should need to die. An example is in Georges marvelous medicine the grandma was the bad person and she didn’t die she shrunk.
    3. I think it’s going to be embarrassing for Holling to be in the school play especially playing a fairy.

    3. I think he will be bulled for wearing the tights.

  26. 1.I do not think it’s fair for Holling because he saved up his 3 weeks allowance for the cream puffs but then the rats got them so then it will be hard for Holling to get all his money back and all of the 24 cream puffs.
I think Mrs. Baker replaced the cream puffs because I bet she felt bad for Holling and that the others were threatening to kill him.
2.Yes I do agree with Holling because if there is a monster the monster will attack you so you need to fight back and no one likes monsters that attack you. This applies to his life because then he might think that everything big and scary he will say that, “this thing must always be defeated.”
3.Playing Ariel in the school play is going to affect his life because every day he will get embarrassed and bullied by lots of people in his school.
